Town of Salina Landfill Closure and Investigation
CHA completed a remedial investigation, feasibility study, and remedial design for the former Town of Salina landfill. The 55-acre landfill is listed by NYSDEC as a Class 2 Inactive Hazardous Waste Site and is also a sub site to the Onondaga Lake Federal superfund site due to the presence of hazardous wastes disposed in the landfill in the 1960s and early 1970s.
We completed the site characterization of the project, including soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater sampling. We completed a feasibility study for closure and cleanup alternatives. The chosen solution included wetland mitigation, a major utility relocation, footprint consolidation of the landfill, capping of the landfill, and the design of a leachate collection trench and a pretreatment system.
The leachate collection trench is over 2,000 feet long and includes submersible extraction well pump stations throughout the collection trench and a common HDPE force main. The on-site leachate pretreatment plant is rated for 25,000 gallons per day and includes an influent pump station, a process building, and a 125,000 gallon storage tank. The treatment facility contained effluent flow metering and sampling infrastructure to meet the monitoring requirements of the discharge permit.
