One means to accomplish this is through the careful analysis of bounded thermal and electrical loads that can be served locally with distributed energy resources (DERs) operating independently from the traditional grid and functioning autonomously as physical or economic conditions may dictate. By very definition, this is a Microgrid: a platform to leverage the resilient and sustainable benefits of clean, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, biofuels, biomass, and even natural gas.
