Nikola Mitrovic, PhD

Senior ITS Data Analyst

Nikola has over 11 years of experience in traffic modeling and over 7 years of experience in machine learning with applications to transportation engineering. A unique career path from transportation engineering via microsimulation modeling to machine learning and data analytics has allowed Nikola to lead and contribute to diverse ITS projects, resulting in more than 30 publications in Tier 1 journals and major conferences. Nikola strives to continuously provide a synergy between transportation principles and applications and powerful analytical and visualization platforms. He has developed multiple geospatial interactive maps that often deploy analytical methods for traffic information collected from various sources to extract relevant insights for traffic operators and other relevant users.

Warehouse Lane Access Improvements

The Insight platform was used for the project.

VISSIM was used for the corridor analysis.

CHA is providing engineering services to construct a new bypass roadway connecting NY Route 119 and the eastbound I-287 Exit 1 exit ramp to Warehouse Lane. This project aims to alleviate truck traffic congestion and safety on NY Routes 119 and 9A.

Traffic data collection and analysis were a critical part of the project since it was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. CHA had to perform extensive data analytics for the 15 intersections within the study area. This included analysis of historical data, use of transportation Big Data solutions like StreetLight Data, and field-collected data at critical locations to develop reliable estimates of exiting traffic data and use that to forecast future traffic volumes for the project area.
