Thornton Heights Commons

Thornton Heights Commons at 611 Main Street introduces affordable housing and street-front commercial space. Built on the former St. John’s Church site, this new four-story mixed-use structure includes 42 apartments, retail space, a satellite police station, community open space, outdoor seating, and parking.

Collaborating with the South Portland Housing Development Corporation, CHA contributed to the design, incorporating architectural bays on upper levels, ground floor commercial space, and indoor/outdoor community areas. Sustainable features encompass a high-efficiency gas boiler system, triple-glazed windows, cross-laminated timber (CLT) components, and a roof-top photovoltaic array for on-site renewable energy. Granite elements from the church are repurposed, highlighting its historical significance. The property allows for additional single-family residential lots.

Thornton Heights Commons breathes new life into this underutilized space, a brownfields clean up success, enhancing South Portland with affordable housing and engaging commercial spaces.
