Pineda Causeway Water Transmission Main Design
The City of Melbourne’s water distribution system includes two water main crossings from the mainland to the outer “beach side” of the system, providing potable water services to the beach side customers. The increasing age of the existing pipelines raised concerns regarding water transmission redundancy. Studies indicated the best location for a third water main crossing is at the northern extremity of the system near Pineda Causeway, “looping” the northern ends of the system to improve water quality and provide operational flexibility.
Hydraulic modeling confirmed that a 16-inch ductile iron (or 20-inch HDPE) diameter water main crossing near the Pineda Causeway is the optimum sizing to provide adequate water service, including fire protection flows, to the beach side of the system. CHA conducted a routing analysis to determine the most efficient and cost-effective routing. The pipeline design includes open cut, horizontal directional drilling, and more than a mile-long subaqueous crossing of the Banana and Indian Rivers.
The scope of services included preliminary and final design, permitting for approximately 18,000 feet of 16-inch FPVC water main. Permits included Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) permit to Construct PWS Components and Individual Statewide ERP, US Army Corps of Engineers permit, Florida Department of Transportation right-of-way permit, and Brevard County Public Works Department right-of-way/easement permit.
