INDOT I-65 Added Travel Lanes

CHA provided full-time construction administration and inspection services for this federal-aid added travel lanes project. The project included the reconstruction of 3.47 miles of I-65 in northern Johnson County and southern Marion County near the City of Indianapolis. This $35.9 million project was completed using the design-build process and focused on the construction of one new median travel lane in both the northbound and southbound directions.

Three bridges were rehabilitated as part of the project. Other project features included final pavement markings, temporary pavement and maintenance of traffic work, erosion control measures, replacement of ITS equipment, the installation of a retaining wall, new signing, barrier wall, guardrail, pipes, and drainage structures.

Notable construction aspects included:

  • Reconfiguration of ramps at three interchanges
  • Reconstruction, repair, and resurfacing of the existing lane while maintaining daily traffic (no closures)
  • Construction of a new storm drainage system
  • Construction of sound walls

CHA’s inspectors worked with INDOT and the design-build team to resolve construction issues and to maintain an aggressive construction schedule that included around-the-clock activity during peak construction periods. Communication with businesses, City officials, INDOT personnel, the design consultant, and the contractor was a critical part of this project’s success.
