Champlain Parkway

The Champlain Parkway is a major transportation initiative for the City of Burlington and VTrans to create a new 2.5-mile arterial corridor to enhance mobility and access between I-189 and the city’s downtown commercial district. This multimodal transportation facility will provide a transportation gateway to the city. The Champlain Parkway includes segments on new alignment and segments using improvements to existing streets.

The project included evaluations of multiple alignments, cross-section alternatives, circulation patterns, roundabout options and provisions for truck movements, transit and pedestrian/bicycle accommodations. These evaluations included assessments of transportation system performance, including travel demand modeling and advanced traffic modeling and analysis of a 32-intersection network, traffic safety and High-Accident screenings, environmental impacts, air/noise impacts, impacts on historic resources, and impacts to rail mainline and yard facilities. The design incorporates streetscape amenities and “Complete Streets” concepts intended to blend this roadway facility with the urban surroundings near Lake Champlain.
