Erie Boulevard Project wins Gold Award for Engineering Excellence

Posted March 28, 2016

The City of Schenectady, a place where people want to live and work. What lies beneath the important gateway into the City of Schenectady and connects Interstate 890 to the downtown area Erie Boulevard.

Built over the historic Erie Canal, the one-mile reconstruction of Erie Boulevard was an incredible feat for our CHA Transportation team. The reconstructed corridor incorporated traffic calming components; new traffic signals and signage; improved parking, drainage, and pedestrian facilities; utility upgrades; new lighting and landscaping treatments; and two mid-block crossings. All improvements were accomplished without disturbing the canal remnants or impacting the vast underground system of private utilities located in the roadway corridor. In addition, a construction sequencing scheme was designed to maintain operations for over 30,000 vehicles daily.

Our Transportation team was awarded Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA) and the 2016 Gold Award for Engineering Excellence by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in New York! Congratulations to Manny Salorio (Project Manager), Sarah Bowman (Traffic and Pedestrian Design), Tim Burtnick (CADD Manager), Mike Campagna (Resident Engineer for Construction), Mickey Dames (CADD Technician), Romulus Danciu (Highway Engineering and Construction Inspection), Christina Doughney (Traffic Engineering), Brian Healy (Highway Engineering) and Pat Quillan (Construction Inspection) on the revitalization of Erie Boulevard!
