CHA's Mini Roundabout Project Wins APWA Georgia Transportation Project of the Year

Posted May 26, 2020

The Georgia Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) will be awarding CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) a Public Works Transportation Project of the Year Award for the U.S. Highway 29 at Hal Jones Road and Greentop Road Mini Roundabouts project. The Georgia Chapter’s 6th Annual Award Program recognizes the best achievements in the public works profession in the state of Georgia.

Growth in the areas north of the City of Newnan, Georgia, had spurred an increase in traffic, exacerbating safety and performance issues at the US 29/SR 14 intersections with Hal Jones Road and Greentop Road. In a joint effort, CHA, Coweta County Public Works, and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) assessed that these intersections would perform better as roundabouts. However, in lieu of full-sized roundabouts, the most cost-effective solution was to build two small diameter roundabouts, offering most of the same benefits of regular-sized roundabouts with significantly reduced costs and impacts. Advanced under GDOT’s Quick Response Program, and constructed within an incredibly short two-week timeframe, the miniature roundabouts have been a resounding success, providing instant improvement in intersection operations and safety for an outstanding value.

CHA shares the honor of this Public Works Project of the Year Award with Coweta County Public Works, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the primary contractor, Piedmont Paving, Inc. The APWA Georgia Chapter will recognize the award winners at its 2020 annual meeting at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.
