CHA's Cable Replacement Project Under Lake Champlain Earns ACEC Vermont Award

Posted February 27, 2019

CHA is elated to announce the Lake Champlain PV-20 Submarine Cable Replacement project earned a Merit Award in the ACEC Vermont Engineering Excellence Awards. This project replaced the submarine transmission cables that connect the Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) and New York Power Authority (NYPA) transmission systems in Vermont and New York. The 1.7-mile route extends from VELCO’s Grand Isle/Gordon’s Landing transition station to NYPA’s Cumberland Head transition station.

The project installed four new 230 kV electric transmission cables (operating at 115 kV) and removed the seven existing 115 kV electric transmission cables crossing Lake Champlain. The design included new transition stations and overhead structures. The techniques and equipment selected, including four installation methods and the use of extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables, enabled the team to commission the new cable and retrieve the old cable without major interruption to power service or impact to the environment.

Congratulations to the CHA Project Team! The 2019 Vermont ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards will be awarded at a gala on June 13, 2019.
