CHA Earns Three Awards in ACEC Indiana 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards

Posted December 17, 2019

CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) continues to earn recognition for its work responsibly improving the world we live in. We are pleased to announce the firm has received an Honor Award and two State Finalist Awards in the ACEC Indiana 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards.

CHA’s Cass Adams CSO Relief Project is a recipient of an Honor Award this year and will be eligible for ACEC Indiana’s Grand Project Award, one of the state’s most prestigious engineering distinctions. As an Honor Award winner, the Cass Adams CSO Relief Project is also eligible to enter the National ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards.

The Cass Adams Relief Sewer is the first of seven projects to control combined sewer overflows in the Bee Slough area, which has been an eyesore to the public for decades.

The City of Evansville’s Integrated Overflow Control Plan (IOCP) addresses water quality in the Ohio River. One major control measure is restoring Bee Slough, a large open concrete-lined swale conveying most of Evansville’s combined sewer overflows. New drains direct CSO flow to the East Wastewater Treatment Plant through 5,000 feet of 60-inch relief sewer and a dewatering pump station. The sewer is maintained by a large retaining wall stained bronze and adorned with architectural revels and lighting. In remedying CSOs while beautifying the area, this project signifies the City’s commitment to using the IOCP for more than water quality mitigation.

CHA’s Anderson Municipal Airport – Runway 12-30 Rehabilitation and Lowes Way Extension projects are both recipients of State Finalist Awards.

Runway 12-30 with a fresh coat of paint

Last overlaid in 1992, Runway 12-30 is the primary runway for Anderson Municipal Airport (AID) in Madison County, Indiana. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) required the rehabilitation of the runway’s pavement as well as the correction of many non-standard conditions. In lieu of an expensive reconstruction to meet FAA standards, the rehabilitation proceeded with FAA-approved Modifications of Standards to implement non-standard changes that significantly improved the safety of the airfield. In tandem with the Runway 12-30 rehabilitation, the project also replaced the airfield’s lighting systems and approach indicators.

The new connection to southbound Keystone Parkway via Lowes Way allows access that did not exist from 146th Street.

The $16M extension of Lowes Way in Carmel, Indiana, meaningfully benefits the community. Built in 2002 as an off-ramp from northbound Keystone Parkway to 146th Street, Lowes Way was extended to provide drivers on 146th Street with much-needed access to southbound Keystone Parkway saving drivers precious time and fuel. Phase I of the project added a needed on-ramp to southbound Keystone Parkway. Creatively financed, with design completed 15 months early, this highly anticipated road project improves network connectivity throughout Hamilton County, reduces emissions and travel times, and provides significant gas savings.

All projects will be recognized on stage at the ACEC Indiana Engineering Excellence Awards Luncheon Banquet held on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at the Indianapolis Marriott North Hotel. The Grand Project Award winner will also be announced at the banquet. These award-winning projects are the latest in a series of CHA projects that have been recognized with state-based ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards, which recognize engineering projects that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity. CHA has earned awards from ACEC Maine, ACEC New York, and ACEC Virginia.
