ACEC New York Platinum Award Goes to CHA for Historic Pool Rehabilitation

December 21, 2021

The rehabilitation of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Park Swimming Pool has earned CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) a Platinum Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York 2022 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition in the Special Projects category.

The annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition honors the year’s top projects for the superior skill and ingenuity of their design. The 1960s-era pool, with capacity for 4,000 patrons, was renovated into a more delightful and accessible attraction for its thousands of annual visitors. This impressive renovation is an important economic development initiative that delights visitors, helps local businesses, and reaffirms the pool as a go-to summer destination.

The renovation occurred during the winter months to ensure no loss of a swimming season, despite the significant challenges of construction during cold weather. A new zero-entry pool section now offers a slope down toward a 9-foot deep end and is decorated by 26 colorful water spray features. A modern filtration system, refurbished lawns and new shade trees improve its sustainability. New restrooms, renovated concessions and lifeguard facilities, and a new first aid pavilion enhance the pool grounds and are all tied together into a cohesive aesthetic through decorative stone, wooden materials, and architectural flourishes.

Winning projects will be recognized at the Engineering Excellence Gala on April 9, 2022. Details of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Park Swimming Pool and other award-winning projects may be viewed at: https://acecny.org/page/eeawinners22
