A Mill with Friends - Gryphon, a CHA Company, Volunteers at Morningstar Mill

Posted May 31, 2017

Brushing the periphery of Lake Moodie in Ontario, Decew Falls offers picnickers a scenic retreat into an oft-forgotten era. Morningstar Mill, nestled atop the falls, completes the nostalgic vignette, remaining almost untouched by time. The industrial heritage site, owned by the City of St. Catharines, is one of the few mills in Ontario to house its original equipment, and even uses moving water to mechanically grind grain into flour in a working grist mill built in 1872.

Preserving this snapshot of history requires tremendous support – and plenty of friends. The Friends of Morningstar Mill is a volunteer group dedicated to restoring the mill and its neighboring buildings, including the 1933 home of the Morningstar family. Since their founding in 1992, the Friends have hosted thousands of tours of Morningstar Mill and repaired much of its historic equipment and buildings.

Gryphon, a CHA Company, is proud to volunteer at the Morningstar Mill. On Friday, May 20, Jim McLeish, Margaret Harding and Brad Green of our St. Catharines office brought the CHA way to the mill. The team, applying their engineering expertise, assisted the mill in cleaning and restoring belts, readying the mill for the start of the summer season.

Thank you for responsibly improving the world we live in by preserving this cherished hideaway!
